Compatible Content

Jibajaba Access Servers are capable of broadcasting any uploaded file. However, only certain file types are readily recognised and usable by current mobile devices. This is a developing situation and it is comforting to know that whatever fashionable applications appear over the next few years, Jibajaba Access servers will have no problem in broadcasting them.

The current compatible file types fall into five main areas:

1. Graphics files, such as Jpeg and Gif. Many mobile phones can take digital photos in Jpeg format and can store and display them. Gif files are another standard type of graphic file with the added benefit of being able to be “animated.” An animated Gif is a series of frames, bound together as a presentation, with a specified order and timings for each frame.

2. Video files, such as mp4. Again many mobile phones can create videos in mp4 format and can store and display them. Existing videos made for other media, such as television, can be re-rendered easily into mp4 format for broadcasting to mobile devices.

3. Audio files, such as mp3. An increasing number of mobile phones are being designed to play music in mp3 format and so most mobiles can store and play them.

4. File types designed to work with mobile phones, such as vcf (contact details) and csv (calendar events, with reminders). Thus it is possible to send a large amount of data - email addresses, website addresses, mobile and landline phone numbers, etc. in one easy step and the recipient can accurately store it immediately.

5. Text files used in web pages, or HTML files. Increasingly mobile phones have incorporated web browsers, they can read HTML, which can be very easily created in most word processing packages. This provides a quick way of creating a message.

6. Applications, usually written in Java. This is a much more complicated area, but with Java applets it is possible to create, for example, interactive applications where the recipient can respond to the message broadcast.
